Reimbursement for a psychologist in Europe depends on the nature of the mental health issues, whether an official diagnosis has been made, and the method of care provided. A significant portion of psychological care is covered by basic health insurance (Health Insurance Act), but specific conditions apply.
Reimbursement through basic health insurance:
With referral from a general practitioner: To be eligible for reimbursement, a referral from a physician (general practitioner, occupational health physician, or medical specialist) is required.
Acknowledged DSM-5 diagnosis: Reimbursement only applies to the treatment of a diagnosed mental disorder listed in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
Deductible: The costs of treatment are deducted from your mandatory own contribution (mostly 25 euro per session).
Not covered by basic health insurance:
Treatments for conditions that are not considered an official mental disorder are not eligible for reimbursement.
